Kicking Bear, a Miniconjou Sioux and militant leader of the, “Ghost Dance” religion, proclaimed that the holy shirts worn in the “Ghost Dance” would protect the wearer from bullets. The resulting disaster ended in the massacre at Wounded Knee on December 29, 1890.
