Shawnee Treaty DelegateGuarded and wary, a Shawnee treaty delegate attends the peace conference at Fort Greenville of 1795. Hungary and war-weary, the Ohio Indians begrudgingly appeared at the conference feeling coerced. There were some 1,100 delegates representing 12 tribes of the Northwest Territory that attended the conference. The predominant tribes in attendance were the Delaware, Pottawatomie, Wyandot, and Shawnee. While some of the Shawnee did attend, many more refused as well as the Sac and Fox. Presiding over this conference was General Wayne Anthony who took great pains not to alienate the Indians and treated each delegate with respect. The central point at issue was land and placing all those living in the Ohio valley under the “protection” of the United States Government. Eventually 91 various chiefs signed the Greenville treaty, ceding 25,000 square miles of their land. |
